Wildfire in Columbia County Under Control

June 20, 2008

COLUMBIA COUNTY - Firefighters say a wildfire burning deep in the woods off Columbia Road near Appling is contained, but they are watching some hot spots.

The fire is so deep in the woods that firefighters and Forestry Division crews had a difficult time reaching it.

They eventually formed a fire break around the perimeter of the fire by using tractors.

Firefighters say they believe the fire had spread to 30 or 50 acres before they could get it under control, but it could be more than that. They won't know for sure until the flames are out, and they can get better estimates.

No buildings were ever in any danger, and no one was hurt.

No word on a cause yet.
