The Waffle House, Dollar General and Best Western have all been victims of armed robberies today. News 12 is on your side with a look at how police are tackling these dangerous holdups.

A string of recent armed robberies has police on alert and looking for clues to possibly connect some of the crimes.

The most recent armed robberies happened just a day and a half apart. First, Richmond County deputies say a man carrying a semi-automatic handgun robbed the Waffle House on Gordon Highway. That prompted a courtesy check for all businesses in the early morning hours.

“They may ride by and wave at the clerk or pull up, stop and walk inside,” said Lt. James Young, Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Lieutenant James Young says all cops on all beats checked out their zones.

And of course they’re 24 hours a day, seven days a week businesses, so I guess you could say that enhances their chances a little bit,” Young said.

Also early in the morning, someone hit the Best Western motel on Jimmy Dyess Parkway, running away with an unspecified amount of cash.

Just hours later, just over the Columbia County line, a duo help up at gunpoint the Dollar General on Bobby Jones Expressway. One person, wearing a green sweatshirt with black pants and the other wearing a tan jogging suit.

Meanwhile, Richmond County officers are still investigating a home invasion in South Augusta last Friday. Police say three suspects stole cash and stacks of jewelry valued in the thousands.

“Some of them, there’s a possibility we could be looking for the same suspects. We can’t say for sure it is. And we can’t rule it out as this time,” Young said.

Lt. Young says since Thanksgiving week, his department has about seven unsolved armed robberies. Police are working across county lines, trying to see if some of the ones in Augusta are connected to those in Columbia County.
