FORT GORDON, GA - Flames caused some scary hours today on Fort Gordon.

A grass fire threatened some of the new military housing, in particular, the Lakeview housing area.

Commanding General Jeff Foley tells News 12 that 170 families were evacuated because of the fire, but no homes were damaged. No one was hurt.

Augusta and Grovetown firefighters worked with Fort Gordon firefighters to put the 20 acre fire out.

General Foley says their efforts kept this fire from becoming a major disaster.

Why is there nothing being done to bring back the train into Augusta? Many people drive to work and other places for entertainment. The commute can be very expensive with the soaring gas prices. Augusta is the second largest city in Georgia yet the elected officials have no vision in this area. A train system would bring additional revenue to the city by bringing people in and transporting individuals to outside areas. A train System once existed here in Augusta and many citizens would welcome its return.
