Bill Powell was killed Tuesday morning after a man came to the Huddle House in North Augusta and shot him and his friend Rev. Earl Carter in the parking lot. The two were regulars. Friends and workers there are having a hard time putting this all behind them.

For years, they've been coming to Huddle House early... between 5:30 and 6:00... to meet with friends and talk about life over coffee. The group, between 3-5 people, is known as the "Board of Directors" at the Huddle House.

They sit just to your right, at the back when you walk through the front door.
"We just sit around and shoot the bull... all kind of stuff," said Marion Kendrick, Rev. Earl Carter's friend.

"We'd sit here, talk bull jive you know. That's just life, " Allen Powell, Bill Powell's friend also added.

Bill Powell and Rev. Earl Carter didn't make it inside for their meeting Tuesday morning.
They were shot in the parking lot. Bettie Gorsline has been waiting on the group since she started work at the Huddle House.

"I brought flowers to put on the table this morning because I didn't want anyone to sit there, " said Betty Gorsline, waiter at the Huddle House.

For a bunch that jokes around so much... she sure didn't expect them to show up Wednesday.

"None of 'em were joking and cutting up like they normally do, but they were there and in spirit... so was Bill and Earl," Bettie emotionally added.

While Earl recovers... there's the realization that Bill won't be coming back.
Now, there's just hope the good memories will see everybody through such a dark time.

"I mean if you didn't have money to pay for your coffee, they'd pay for it. That's just the way they were," said Marion.

"It's hard on me because you see a friend of yours die out there in the parking lot," said Allen.

Grief counselors were brought into this Huddle House for employees, customers, family, and friends. News 12 has learned they'll stick around as long as they're needed.
