A 20-year-old high school student was charged with having a weapon on school grounds after school officials find a knife in his backpack, a report said.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- A 20-year-old high school student was charged with having a weapon on school grounds after school officials find a knife in his backpack, a report said.

Austin Smith's mother called in a Richmond County Board Of Education police officer to Glenn Hills High School after she says her son stole her wallet from their home, a report said. The officer emptied out Smith's backpack and only found the mother's cell phone and a Bowie knife.

Smith was charged and taken to the Richmond County jail.
