GIRARD, Ga. (WRDW) -- "As a mother, it's hard to imagine. I mean, if something was to happen to your own children, and to hear for another mother to be hurting in such a way, it's upsetting. It's unnerving," Quenby Plemmons said.

Those are the sympathetic words of a concerned mother after dogs attacked a little 2-year-old girl next door.

"I heard the music, and then I heard a lot of gunshots," she said.

It happened in the yard of a Girard home Saturday afternoon. Deputies say two dogs wandered into the yard and attacked the girl while she was playing with friends.

The incident report says the father fired a pistol in the air to get the dogs to stop, but not before his daughter had suffered from 66 bite marks, resulting in at least 80 staples for her injuries.

"There were no words," said Samantha Holton as she shook her head. "I was devastated. I feel awful. It actually happened to a good friend of mine in town's granddaughter."

Holton runs the Girard Life Saver Rescue. With no Animal Control division in Burke County, she says the next question is what will happen to the dogs.

"What they're going to do to quarantine the dogs now with no shelter. There are a lot of questions," Holton said.

The report says the dogs are at their home chained to trees in the front yard.

But Holton says the county needs a better system.

"I've always said and I still feel this way, that it's gonna take a bad incident like this to get any action," she said.

"My wishes go out to that mother and that family, and I hope that little girl is okay," Plemmons said.

The incident report also said the owner of the dogs had owned them since they were puppies.

Initial report:

BURKE COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW) -- A 2-year-old is in the hospital after getting attacked by dogs in Burke County Sunday evening.

Family members say the child was at a friend's house and had been playing with the dogs all day.

They think it was when the child was given some chips and candy that the two dogs attacked.

Family members say the child has now been moved out of the ICU and is recovering from 66 bite marks and has nearly 80 staples.

The family says the dogs have been quarantined and that their 2-year-old is a fighter.
