Three of the major television networks announced plans Wednesday for an initiative to fight cancer.
CBS, NBC and ABC are joining forces for a primetime program Friday, September 5, 2008. The fundraiser will air simultaneously on the three networks with no commercial breaks.
The effort is to help researchers find cures for the many types of cancer. Every dollar raised by the networks will go to research.
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S, trailing only Cardiovascular Disease.
Figures show about 870,000 Americans die of heart-related programs each year. Cancer claims about 554,000 lives. Other leading causes of death include chronic lower respiratory diseases, accidents and diabetes, according to the American Heart Association.
