COLUMBIA, S.C.---South Carolina's cigarette tax will stay the lowest in the country.

Governor Mark Sanford Tuesday vetoed a plan to increase the tax from seven cents a pack to 57 cents a pack. Sanford says the tax hike would increse the overall tax burden.

He also said he believes the hike is irresponsible because it would expand Medicaid benefits without any way to pay for them in the future.
