ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- A 16-year police veteran killed on duty
last week was remembered as a goodhearted man who was full of
energy and had no cross words for anyone.
Orangeburg County Corporal William Howell Junior was shot and
killed early the morning of May 3 while he was working on a
domestic violence call. The man police say shot the 46-year-old
deputy later died after he was hit by a car.
Orangeburg County Sheriff Larry Williams told The Times and
Democrat of Orangeburg that nearly 600 law enforcement officers
from several states attended Saturday's funeral.
Family members and other friends shared memories of Howell, sang
his favorite hymns and hugged throughout the service held at Lake
Marion High School in Santee. Howell was buried at his home church
in Eutawville. --- Associated Press
