It’s good for commerce in Columbia County and bad for traffic. The grand opening of Kohl’s in Evans is Thursday and hundreds are expected. Washington Road already has some traffic issues because of construction, and the new businesses, like Kohl’s, are expected to cause delays between five and ten minutes around the area. Others to open soon are Target, Chick-Fil-A, Babies R Us, La-Z-Boy and others set to open by the spring of 2006.
The Georgia Department of Transportation is making improvements to the area to help with the flow of traffic. They have added turn lanes, concrete islands, and a left turn signal at the light leaving the parking lot. The light is not timed to help keep traffic moving.
Right now, Columbia County police say there have not been any major issues with the area, and the DOT improvements should keep traffic moving.
