Aiken County Bus Stops Changing

Bus stops for some kids in Aiken County may be changing. As new kids move to the county, sometimes extra stops are added that really aren’t allowed. News 12 is on your side with why some bus stops will disappear.

Sever-year-old Aleasia McCullough has a longer walk to her bus stop this week.

“The bus stop was originally here and now they’re asking that she walk down the road and around the corner to the fire hydrant to get picked up,” said Montara McCullough.

Aleasia’s mom is upset because she used to watch her daughter get on the bus through the front window and now Aleasia is out of sight.

Aleasia’s mom, Montara, worries about the sharp curve near the new stop. But Montara may not be the only concerned parent.

Aiken County’s transportation supervisor Maria McClure is driving the county checking the district’s bus stops to make sure they meet state rules. McClure has checked about half of the district’s stops since school started and about 30 have moved.

“We noticed that this road is too narrow,” McClure said.

Most stops are changed because they’re too close together.

“This is nothing new. The state department hasn’t put anything new on us. They’re just monitoring our routes more closely and we want to make sure we’re in compliance,” McClure said.

In South Carolina bus stops must be 1/5 of a mile apart and stops off the main road must be at least a half-mile down.

“They need to consider the age of the children that will get picked up,” McCullough said.

“We’re going to try and accommodate as much as we can as long as we stay within our guidelines,” McClure said.

But a rule is a rule. So Aleasia’s mom may have to take her concerns to the statehouse.

If your child’s bus stop is changing, a note will go home from school with them a few days before. The note will let you know where the new stop is and if the pick-up time is changing.
