AUGUSTA, Ga. -- We're only a couple of hours into 2013 and Richmond County investigators have already found themselves working the first murder of the new year.

Edward Yancey, 21, was shot and killed outside a club on Peach Orchard Road. Witnesses say the he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"It was the new year and we were all gonna celebrate and have fun," said Carlysha Golatt, who welcomed the new year inside Club Fiesco.

But the fun ended quickly when Yancey was shot and killed.

"I just seen a gun pointing up," Golatt said. "I didn't see who had it or anything. I just saw a gun pointing up."

The club closed at 2 a.m. The shooting happened about 15 minutes later as everyone was heading to their cars.

"By the time we got to the car, we saw everybody else running towards the club," Golatt said. "When we turned around, we heard gunshots."

Witnesses say the shooter was running along the property line when he began firing shots into the air.

"A bullet has to land somewhere," Golatt said.

One of the bullets landed in Yancey's car. Deputies say he was an innocent bystander. They believe the shooting stemmed from an argument inside the club, but Yancey was not involved.

"He wasn't doing anything wrong. He wasn't even arguing," Golatt said. "The wrong person got in the wrong spot and it was all for nothing really."

His friends and first responders tried to help, but in the end, they couldn't save his life.

"We watched him and he still had a pulse and what-not and then the cops came and pushed on the chest a couple times and then we didn't hear from him no more," she said.

It's something Golatt says is still hard to comprehend.

"Really that's all that's really stuck in my head is that white body bag," she said.

An image she says that she'll never forget.

"When I seen him, he was happy. He was jumping up and down in the club, and I seen him again and he was laying on the ground," Golatt said.

In a split second, a young life ends on a night to celebrate a new beginning.

The coroner says his autopsy will be done on Thursday at the GBI Crime Lab in Augusta. Deputies do not have a suspect at this point. They are continuing to investigate and ask anyone with information to call the Sheriff's Office.
