Soldiers Help From USS Iwo Jima

Video will be available shortly.

September 12, 2005
The USS Iwo Jima is now berthed on the Mississippi River near the New Orleans Convention Center. The soldiers now have to move to a different location.

The soldiers’ motto is ‘get the message through.’ That’s exactly what they’ve done for the fifth Army that’s in New Orleans from Baton Rouge. They came in a couple of days ago so they could get closer to the city.

Right now they’re temporarily staying on Iwo Jima which is right next to downtown and the Riverwalk in New Orleans. They are hoping to move into the city to the Hilton Hotel. It will help them communicate with FEMA, Homeland Security and other military personnel.

“We’re not staying on the Iwo Jima because there’s just not enough sleeping capacity or room for the fifth Army and FEMA headquarters to be able to work together to get reconstruction going on,” said Lt. Yarborough.

Lt. Yarborough is from Fort Gordon and has been on the USS Iwo Jima since it left Baton Rouge. Iwo Jima has it’s own communication center, but the one on land will accommodate more people.
