It’s the ultimate ‘semper fi’ to honor hundreds of Marines and Navy Corpsmen who have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. News 12 is with Marines at Fort Gordon who are running around the clock for nearly two weeks.
Each lap around Baron Field honors one fallen man or woman who served in Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom.
Corporal Kyle Shaw is headed off to Iraq next year.
“We’re all brothers, so for each one, they’re all equal to me,” Shaw said.
He is Friday’s second runner and will do all this again eight more times. One Marine at a time will run one lap twenty-four hours a day until they have honored each soldier. The fallen soldier’s picture and a few nice words are shown on a big screen.
“Our big thing is maintaining those ties with our fallen comrades and men,” said Captain Barian Woodward.
Captain Barian Woodward just got back from six years in Japan. He is eager to remember the men he fought with.
They cross the finish line after running a three-mile lap. Over the thirteen days they’re going to be out here, they’re going to run 1,800 miles.
The tribute will end early on November 10th with the playing of Taps and the singing of the Marine hymn. That’s the 230th birthday of the Corps.
