A scuffle at Tubman Middle School leaves one student with a broken arm. But it wasn’t two students. According to one boy, a school employee is the one who broke the student’s arm. News 12 has more on this developing story.
The scuffle happened Thursday. The school says they were trying to control an unruly student, but the boy and his mom tell a different story.
“This is uncalled for, it shouldn’t have went that far,” said Indian Dunn, parent.
Indian Dunn is fighting mad about a school employee she says is out of control. Her 12-year-old son, spending Thursday afternoon in the hospital, left with a broke arm after a scuffle at school.
“He said, ‘You wanna fight me, you wanna fight me, you wanna fight me?’ He told me to sit down. I said I’m about to sit down. He tried to do me like this, I moved his hand,” said Russeial Dunn, student.
The employee in question is identified as Mr. Hankerson by the Dunns and a police report filed with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.
“This is a 12-year-old child, this is a grown man. And you’ve been working with Special Ed all this time. It shouldn’t have gone this far with him, getting a broken arm and getting choked,” Indian said.
Indian Dunn kept her son home from school Friday. Russeial Dunn’s arm is wrapped in a hard case and blue sling.
“Mister Hankerson, he gave me a call at 3:30 Thursday letting me know that my child’s arm was broken. And he was saying that he attacked him and he had to put force on him,” Indian said.
Tubman Middle School Principal Rickey Lumpkin confirms the altercation, but says it was prompted by the student, who he did not name. Lumpkin says the student was sent to the office for disrupting class and suspended Thursday. But when school officials couldn’t contact the parents, they sent him back to class. Lumpkin then says a second argument started, Mr. Hankerson tried to restrain the student, but lost his footing and accidentally fell on his arm.
Principal Lumpkin says that the entire incident started because the student became combative and disruptive in class. School Spokeswoman Mechelle Jordan says the Board of Education’s Internal Affairs unit is investigating.
