It’s a big question looming over South Carolina’s governor. Forty percent of contributions for his re-election campaign are from outside the state. News 12 is on your side, posing the question to Sanford as he cycles out of Aiken.

Will he or won’t he? South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford is facing the growing speculation that he’s racing for the White House. So what’s his take on it?

“I’m a wannabe biker, or cyclist,” Sanford said.

Surrounded by hundreds of bikers ready to ride, South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford high steps around speculation that he’s running for the White House in 2008.

“Absolutely not. I don’t know who started that rumor, but they had a lot of fun with it,” Sanford said.

Sanford says he’s focused on the Palmetto State issues, including this heart stopping stat: South Carolina ranks in the top ten nationally for obesity, heart disease and diabetes.

“In too many cases, we are couch potatoes,” Sanford said. “As South Carolinians, we need to get out and get a bit more active than we do right now. There are a thousand different things we could do.”

Nearly 300 cyclists gathered in Aiken, joining Governor Sanford for a sixty-mile ride to Columbia.

“As a kid, it got me places, and then I just grew to love it and continued the enjoyment throughout my life,” said Tom Rishforth, Piedmont, SC.

“It does great for the cardiovascular system, makes you feel better about yourself. It’s great for the heart, enjoyment and gives you energy for life, too,” said Robin Floyd, Greer, SC.

Sanford’s wife and three kids came along for the ride. But Governor Sanford took the lead, taking just two breaks en route to the capital.

The governor pulled into Columbia at about 1:30 Sunday afternoon. He hosted a lunch at the Governor’s Mansion for everyone who also made the trip.
