Mailing your tax returns in Augusta

By  |

The Postal Service encourages the public to mail their Federal and State tax returns before the Tuesday, April 15th deadline to avoid the last-minute rush to the post office. However, as a convenience, the Augusta Main Post Office, 525 8th St, will provide extended hours.

The window service will be open until 9:00pm on April 15th. In addition, mail deposited before midnight in collection boxes at the Main Post Office ONLY will be collected and receive an April 15th postmark.

Customers are advised to check the pickup schedules on other boxes throughout the city to be sure deposits are made before the last collection time. This will ensure tax documents will be collected and postmarked before the deadline.

Another aid to customers is the Automated Postal Centers located in the lobbies of the Forest Hills Branch, Martinez Branch and the Evans, Ga. Post Office. Use of these self-service centers will help to avoid a wait in the window service line.

To further assist tax filers, the Postal Service suggest the following tax time mailing tips:

Be sure the envelope has the proper amount of postage, especially if there are extra forms included. The Internal Revenue Service will not accept returns without postage or with insufficient postage. Self-service scales are available in postal lobbies for weighting and verifying postage. If using a non-IRS labeled envelope, be sure the address is correct. Also, remember to place a return address in the upper left-hand corner of the envelope.
