News 12 is collecting money at the Wal-Mart on Whiskey Road in Aiken for the Red Cross. People in Aiken County opened up their wallets, dropped in their cash and started writing checks.

“I have four grandchildren, so I put in $10 for each one,” said Eva Hall.

It’s money that will help many grandchildren in the Gulf Coast.

“It goes for feeding. It goes for water. It goes for clothes, shoes, diapers, formula, really whatever people need to survive while they’re down there,” said Kelly Hagens-Swart, Red Cross.

And maybe it was the country music playing out front, but some came to Wal-Mart by whatever means they could. Mo Terry drove his 1949 John Deer.

“I can’t imagine what they’re going through. It’s just unbelievable,” Terry said.

But many can imagine, they’re giving because they too have been through a disaster.

“This is so emotional for me. I lived in San Francisco when they had the big earthquakes and it’s just devastating,” said Carrie Corbett.

“We went through Hugo when it came through and I know how it destroys everything just about,” Eva Hall said.

News 12 will be collecting money at the Aiken Wal-Mart Thursday and Friday from 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
