SALUDA COUNTY, S.C. (WRDW) -- A 17-year-old Saluda County boy is dead after drowning at Lake Murray Sunday.
An officer with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources says they got a call around 4 p.m.
Four teenagers were on a pontoon boat coming into a dock on Riverbend Point in Saluda, S.C. Officers say they were about 20 feet out when two of the teens decided to jump in the water and swim to the bank.
The boys started struggling in the water. Officers say a bystander then threw them a life jacket, where one person took hold. They say when the boy turned around to look for his friend, he had gone underwater.
Divers and rescue personnel from Newberry and Union County rescue squads recovered the body shortly before 6 p.m.
There is no word on what caused the boys to start struggling in the water. The coroner says the area they jumped into was 12 feet deep and 80 degrees.
