Columbia, SC--

South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford has asked President Bush to declare nine counties in the state disaster areas after the storms across the state in mid-March.

Among the nine counties are Aiken, Allendale, Edgefield and Orangeburg.

The Governor says those, and five other counties, are in rural, low-income areas with high unemployment rates. He added that would make recovery more difficult. The other counties are Berkeley, Florence, Kershaw, Newberry and Williamsburg.

Insurers say the estimated damage is about $43 million.

Federal and state experts were in several counties late last week to look at the damage.

There were at least 15 tornadoes reported across the state.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
