Chelsea Collins Remembered

Students at Lakeside High remember Chelsea Collins. She played the xylophone in band, and members are banding together to keep her memory alive.

They have her picture and hat sitting on the xylophone, and they will make a banner to put on the instrument. They will also take it to each football game this season. The band will wear black ribbons at this Friday’s football game at Westside High School.

Her band director says she was a quiet girl who got along well with everyone and who was easy to work with in class. She was well-liked and well-respected. He also said she played two other instruments, the piano and obo.

The band practices three times a week in the evening, and the director says they comply with Columbia County’s policy regarding physical activity in the heat.

Some parents are concerned that the early start date of school exposes students to hot conditions. Officials in the school system say they took a survey several years back, and 69% of parents support the early start date. They say this gives them the ability to provide fall break, and students will be able to take their final exams before the holidays.
