GREER, S.C. (AP) -- BMW says it will spend $750 million to expand its manufacturing facility in South Carolina and create 500 new jobs.
The company said Monday it will add 1.2 million square feet of production space and work already has begun with the construction of new paint shop facilities. The company says it will build a new hybrid vehicle unveiled in the fall and diesel-powered models at the plant.
Governor Mark Sanford and other officials were on hand for the formal announcement. The company started producing cars in Greer in 1994 and now makes 155,000 a year. BMW says that will increase to 240,000 yearly during the next four years.
