Suspended state official resigns

COLUMBIA, S.C.---Suspended South Carolina Assistant Agriculture Commissioner James Trexler has resigned.

He had been suspended without pay after he was charged with five counts of animal cruelty. Five malnourished horses were found on his property.

Trexler's mother, Hazelene, and his brother, Terry, are facing charges in South Carolina and Jefferson County, Georgia in the investigation.
They were sent to Georgia Thursday to face the Jefferson County charges.

Terry Trexler and Hazelene Trexler each face 30 charges of animal cruelty and 25 counts of moving horses that had been quarantined in Georgia. Lastweek, 23 malnourished horses were found on South Carolina properties leased by Terry and Hazelene Trexler.
