The Georgia House has voted down an effort to erase the state's car tax.

The constitutional amendment pushed by House Speaker Glenn Richardson failed Wednesday on a 110 to 62 vote. It needed a two-thirds majority to pass.

The plan would have meant the loss of $672 million a year in tax revenues.

Critics called it "irresponsible.".

You pay the tax when you register or re-register your vehicle.
