United Way raises more than $4 million for community

AUGUSTA, Ga---$4,321,409…that’s the number announced at United Way of the CSRA’s 2008 Annual Meeting hosted today at the Augusta Marriott Hotel & Suites.

Mark Maund, United Way’s 2007 Campaign Chair, announced the campaign dollars raised in 2007 and noted that out of that total, $3,600,643 was raised in the United Way campaign and $720,766 in the Combined Federal Campaign. Mr. Maund thanked the more than 700 local businesses and thousands of contributors who made this success a reality. Now, the dollars raised will be allocated to funding programs that help those in need throughout the CSRA.

United Way’s Annual Meeting, which hosted almost 600 community and business leaders, was presented by MCGHealth, Procter & Gamble Manufacturing Company, and Blanchard and Calhoun Real Estate Company.

With a Hollywood theme, the event celebrated United Way’s Stars, the volunteers, donors, and advocates who make United Way’s accomplishments possible each year.

United Way honored the Top Companies running United Way campaigns during 2007 and presented the first Spirit of Community Award to Electrolux.

Electrolux ran an exemplary campaign during 2007, and they were recognized for their strong campaign participation, high employee and corporate per capita, strong leadership giving, and overall volunteerism in the community.

News 12 Anchors Richard Rogers and Meredith Anderson served as emcees for the community event. Special music was provided by Vickie Daniels, Washington Savannah River Company, and her parents Lloyd and Mary Butler were on hand to perform an entertaining dance routine. Megan Luquire and friends from the Augusta West Performing Company announced United Way’s campaign dollars with a wonderfully choreographed ballet routine.

Tom Tynan, Vice President of Southern Nuclear Operating Company – Plant Vogtle, presented the 2007 Alvin W. Vogtle Volunteer of the Year award to Mr. J. Edward Enoch, Jr. Mr. Enoch is an active leader in the Augusta community where he is involved with a number of charities and civic organizations including The Family Y, United Way of the CSRA, Golden Harvest Food Bank, The Community Foundation for the CSRA, Augusta South Rotary Club, Augusta-Aiken Society of Human Resource Managers, and Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, to name a few.

Mr. Tynan commended Mr. Enoch for his service to those in need, his professional expertise, and his reputation for achieving results. Mr. Tynan presented Mr. Enoch with a check for $2,750 to be donated to his charity of choice. Also nominated for this prestigious award were Bill Bohling, Towanna Godowns, Chess Howard Jr., and Hardi Jones.

Mr. Lee Smith, Chair, Nominating Committee, presented United Way’s Board of Directors for 2008. Mark Allison, Dr. Michael Ash, Walter Dukes, Jeff Spears, Dr. Samuel Sullivan, John Weigle, and Anna Doris Wilds were elected to a second 3-year term of office, and Bill Bohling and Rev. Cynthia Taylor were elected to a variable one-year term. Mr. Smith introduced new Board members: Donald Bailey, David Belkoski, Roger Duke, Dr. Alice Frye, Shayne George, Eddie Huff, Sue Parr, John Ray, Karen Ribble, Leo Sain, and Sam Tyson.

Ms. Marianne Frederic, keynote speaker from Taylors, South Carolina, inspired the audience with her motivational remarks. Ms. La Verne H. Gold, United Way’s new President/CEO, presented gifts donated by Windsor Jewelers to Cheryl Cheek and Mark Maund, 2007 Board Chair and Campaign Chair, and thanked them for their outstanding leadership during 2007.

Ms. Cheryl Cheek, 2007 Board Chair, presented United Way’s accomplishments for 2007 and thanked the faithful volunteers and supporters who helped make the accomplishments possible.

She encouraged everyone to look for more great things to come from this United Way in 2008.
