COLUMBIA COUNTY, GA---Two workers were trapped this morning when a trench collapsed on them, according to Columbia County Emergency Services Director Pam Tucker.
The collapse happened at Blue Ridge Crossing and Commons Drive about 10:30 this morning when the workers were working on sewer lines.
Martinez-Evans Fire Rescue crews arrived quickly. Georgia Power workers stabilized a nearby power pole to help out. For safety reasons one worker was freed fairly quickly, but the second, Gil Gilwater, was trapped up to his knees for about two and a half hours before he was finally freed.
"He was underwater for awhile and we were worried about hypothermia," Battalion Chief Anthony Lovett told News 12.
Gilwater was airlifted to MCG, where he's now in fair condition. An ambulance took the other worker in for treatment.
