New trial for man convicted of murdering mother

January 8, 2008

ATLANTA, Ga.---The Georgia Supreme Court has ordered a new trial for a Columbia County man convicted of killing his mother.

The court overturned Tom Edwin Chumley's conviction because of what it said was a judge's error in giving his opinion to the jury. However, the court also said the evidence against Chumley was enough to prove his guilt.

Chumley was convicted in 2005 in the shooting death of his mother, Meredith Guy, at her Twin Lakes home in 2003. He had twice confessed to the murder on videotape.

Chumley was sentenced to life plus five years and is currently at Hays State Prison.
