AUGUSTA, GA (WRDW) -- "This about the best one I ever used. Nice management and good property," Geno Daughtry said.

He may be counting his blessings after finding the lock on his self-storage unit still in one piece.

"I believe my unit is okay," Daughtry said.

But some other customers at Midway Storage and Rentals on Barton Chapel Road in Augusta were not so lucky. Eleven units were broken into and ransacked on Tuesday night.

Authorities said items were stolen out of two pick-up trucks. However it appears nothing was taken from the storage units which were all secured by simple padlocks that were cut and left on the ground.

"It's just amazing that somebody just want to cut locks off and take other people's stuff," Daughtry said.

American Storage on Wrightsboro Road was also targeted. Fourteen units there were ransacked.

If you are like Daughtry and keep your personal belongings in a storage facility you can get insurance that can cover your property in the event of a loss such as theft, fire or even a flood.

For example, Safestor insurance offers 3 coverage limits: $4,000, $10,000 or $15,000 and the premiums per month for those limits are $6, $18 and $24.

Also the Insurance Information Institute says typically, standard homeowners and renters insurance policies do include off-premises property protection for theft and damage, which may cover your self-storage unit property.

Something Daughtry said he will look into.

"It's very important now. It's very important because you don't know what's going on in the world today," Daughtry said.

So for the cost of an average fast food meal, you can get a month of minimum coverage on a self-storage unit.

Also keep in mind that some insurance coverage does not cover antiques, jewelry and motorized vehicles, so read the policy exclusions carefully.
