AUGUSTA, GA (WRDW)
Arthur King was among them as he arrived ready to work and we told him it was a scam.
"Come on man," says King.
Instead of picking up a second job he was left disappointed instead. King, like other folks who drove off upset after we told them the news, were all victimized by a Craigslist contractor job scam that began in Athens, Georgia around Labor Day weekend.
"He said come here to the safety meeting today at 9:30 this morning they gon' have this uniform ready and everything," says King.
But they all arrived at the Comfort Inn and Suites off Gordon Highway only to discover there was no job orientation and no job. The hotel received numerous calls from folks who thought it might be a scam.
"He told me he was smith, smith construction and all that there, but it sounded like it was real, because I had worked at Fort Gordon." Dennis Tate was there as well wanting to see how many folks showed up.
"So far two people have showed up and they've left," says Tate. But News 12 learned others were taken too. Tate was not among them.
On Thursday he spoke to News 12 about how the scammer also promised him a job on Fort Gordon as a contractor. "I needed to send him a Green Dot money pack number," says Tate. For $35, but Tate refused after he says he felt it was a scam.
"I called the Comfort Inn and they said they have no reservations for this construction company. But while Tate did not take the bait certainly others did. "I'm just glad it wasn't no more than $35," says King.
