12 On Your Side: Deadline arrives for Columbia County hospital deal

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW) -- "It was very scary that I'm counting down the minutes to when I can get my car to the hospital," said Brittney Nelson.

That is what she said she was thinking after suffering from an allergic reaction. Nelson said she needed medical help and fast.

"Doctor's is a bit of a drive to get down there," said Nelson. She said she would like to see a hospital built closer to where she and her family lives in Columbia County. It could happen soon.

Several proposals are on the table by GRU, Doctor's Hospital and University Hospital to build a state-of-the-art medical facility in the county.

"I think whenever anybody has small children you want security. You want to be close to something that will be helpful to you being a parent," said Nelson. The hospital could cost upwards of $300 million and bring 750-900 jobs to the county. But, for young parents with active kids like Nelson, it is all about piece of mind.

"My son got his black belt a few weeks ago. My daughter does horseback riding, it's exhausting we are jumping off the wall here all the time. I need a hospital close," said Nelson. During tonight's meeting which will be open to the public, county commissioners will make their decision on which hospital proposal they intend to move on.

"Having a hospital in Grovetown rather than Evans is that it's closer to freeway access," said Nelson.

The state will make the final decision to accept or deny the plan.
