AUGUSTA, GA (WRDW)
Ronnie Pearre with AugustaSigns.net says car wrapping can be a very effective way to advertise. "A vehicle wrap is the most effective way to advertise. You can get between 30,000 and 70,000 views per day. It's a moving billboard," says Pearre.

So when Robert Soper got an email to advertise for a popular brewery, it was bottoms up. I've had one of my vehicles wrapped before and it was $500," says Soper.

But this deal promised to pay him even more than that. "That it would pay me $300 a week as long as I was driving the vehicle," says Soper.

He says he gave them his address and information about his pickup truck. "About three days later I did get a check in the mail," says Soper.

For $3,300. He says he emailed the company back but his emails were undeliverable. "It didn't sound quite right," says Soper. He suspected something was brewing, so he contacted News 12 and we investigated by first calling the phone number listed on the package he got in the mail. It was disconnected.

So we next we Googled the address on the check. It pulled up a ritzy condominium in New York City. Not exactly a beer factory. Our investigation confirmed for Soper that this was indeed a scam. "Anyone that's willing to get a little extra cash is vulnerable for it because I bought into it," says Soper.

Now he is grateful he did not get drunk on the thought of a few extra bucks. "I'm glad I didn't cash it. Glad I didn't get charged with fraud," says Soper.

Unlike most check overpayment schemes, Soper was never asked to wire any money and that is only because the sender's email and phone number were disconnected.

Had Soper deposited the check into his account and not drawn against it, it would have eventually cleared from his account once his bank discovered it was a fake.
