12 On Your Side: Big brother making Masters traffic jams disappear

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- "Yesterday was the perfect storm. We just got everybody in and then they closed the course and now we have to get everybody out at once," said Steve Cassell, Augusta's interim deputy administrator.

What could have been a logistical nightmare for some Augusta roads during opening day at the Masters. But it is the job of a traffic control command post set up inside Westside High School in Augusta to make sure that does not happen.

"We've had the system in for 3 years now and that helps us to individually manage intersections if we have to," said Cassell. He says his staff in conjunction with the Georgia DOT will be closely monitoring traffic flow all week and into the weekend from 17 cameras strategically placed along major thoroughfares that lead to and from the Augusta National.

"That gives us a wide range of view all up and down Washington Road and River Watch where we can see where our backups are and address them as they occur, "said Cassell. But traffic has not always moved so smoothly down Washington Road during Masters week.

Some still believe that the Masters and Washington Road spell horrific traffic backups. "It's legendary over the years but I'd say within the last five years there's been a significant difference," said Cassell.

Technological improvements that Cassell said will continue to make traveling through parts of Augusta during Masters week easier. "They can expect to have a good time at the golf course and not worry about the traffic. We'll get you there and we'll get you out," said Cassell.
