AUGUSTA, GA (WRDW)
"Our backyard is horrible. It is, it's horrible," says Lucas. Which is why Karen Lucas says she was so excited in March to enter the into the "ugliest backyard makeover contest" advertised on Southern Georgia Landscaping's Facebook page.
But now months after the contest, she says the company has given her the run around about doing the work it promised her. She says it has been 3-months of excuses and canceled appointments.
In fact in one email from Southern Georgia Landscaping which we obtained, it says they are not going to forfeit making money just to do a free makeover.
The company is located at 375 Long Horn Road in Hepzibah.
"They would announce the winner on June 15, and schedule the makeover at the same time. Well, its September 9th," says Lucas.
Three months since the contest officially ended. Three days after winning, Lucas says she sent an email expressing her excitement. The company replied the next day saying it was "backed up due to rain and that it had not had time to contact her."
Lucas says it was the first of many excuses to come.
"The runaround every time I've tried to contact them," says Lucas. She says the last straw came in late August when she got a text from the company. "They even scheduled and didn't show. Canceled at the last second, kind of thing," says Lucas.
We spoke by phone with owner Mike Cammal. He hung up on us but not before telling us that bad weather held back projects for weeks and that he thought Lucas was ok with the delays. "Because I have been so nice, that's why he thought I was fine with it," says Lucas.
She read the last email she says she got from the company last month. "We can't stop what we're doing to fork out all the money to do a makeover when this is our busy season to save up to do a makeover in your yard which is free to you," says Lucas.
We searched for Southern Georgia Landscaping' Facebook contest page again on Monday. but it appears both of the company's pages have been taken down.
"The whole Facebook page was deleted when I looked," says Lucas.
Now she says she feels used. "For me it was to get a backyard makeover for them I think it was to get the advertisement and they did. They got 500 plus likes on the page just from the contest," says Lucas.
She says she is not holding on to much hope that Southern Georgia Landscaping will keep its promise.
