AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- When Gloria Swinney told us she could not get a title for her mobile home we went to work to clear up what seems to be some misinformation.
"I don't have my title. I'm not a homeowner. I feel disgusted," said Swinney. It is how she feels despite having paid off her 1984 Plywood Palace mobile home nearly 2 years ago.
"When you are a homeowner and have nothing to show for it., you're not a homeowner," said Swinney.
She showed News 12 a bill of sale but said she has called every month for the past year trying to get the title from the property manager at Augusta Estates on Milledgeville Road in Augusta. "I asked her for my title. She said well, I'm going to have to get with Mr. Nault who is the owner," said Swinney.
Frustrated, she contacted 12 On Your Side to get answers. "I saw that y'all resolve a lot of different things for a lot of different people and I thought that maybe you could help me," said Swinney.
We contacted Augusta Estates' owner James Nault. He said he tried twice to get a title but the insurance company said the bill of sale was good enough because the mobile home was a 1984 or older model. Nault added that if he or the insurance company made a mistake, could we show him where to go and he would apply for the title.
"When I talked to him he told me he was looking into it because he said he thought he had the title in his personal paperwork." said Swinney.
12 On Your Side went to work. We called the Georgia DMV and confirmed a title is required for all mobile homes built since 1963.
So, again, we emailed the owner and gave him the information that could help Swinney get her title. But Swinney said after all this time she remains skeptical of ever getting her title.
