AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- When James Rachels received a letter in the mail promising him a reduced interest rate on his mortgage he said the offer seemed a little hard to believe.
"It's a letter for a veterans affairs refinancing program," said Rachels. The letter informed Rachels he was pre-qualified for a 15 year fixed refinance loan for as little as 3.25 percent. Half of what he said he is paying now.
"The veterans, they are out there putting their lives on the line to protect this country and people are out there trying to take advantage of them," Rachels said.
Not wanting to be scammed, Rachels sent our Richard Rogers a Facebook message. Richard forwarded it to the On Your Side team to investigate. "Before I call them and give them any of my personal information, I wanted to check with News 12," Rachels said.
We went to work to find out if this offer was legit or a scam. We put the address on the envelope into Google Street View and it matched with
Quicken Loans, which sent Rachels the letter. We confirmed the company owns office space in the building.
Next we called the toll-free number listed on the letter Rachels received. Finally we checked the company's rating with the Better Business Bureau and found it gets an A+.
"If it's, if it's legit it would certainly help out," said Rachels. We ensured Rachels that the company was real. We also cautioned him that the letter did not promise him that 3.25 percent interest rate, but that he could get an interest rate that low. He contacted the company to see how it could help him.
"I appreciate you all being there for us common people. We can get a little help if we need it," Rachels said.
So if you are ever in doubt about a company or offer you receive, do what we did. First go online and check the company's rating on the Better Business Bureau. Also Google the street address to make sure it actually exists, and even Google the phone number to see what comes back.
