AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- The ongoing investigation now includes as many as 2 dozen people. Both the Richmond County Sheriff's Office and Crime Stoppers are offering $2,000 rewards for information about this case.
On Wednesday, 20 year-old Xavier Cooper was in court. He is accused of shooting Paine College student JaJuan Baker in the head inside a campus building.
His appearance came just hours after a joint new conference with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office and Paine College officials.
"Based on a witness statement who is also a Paine College student, the subject (Cooper) allegedly purchased narcotics earlier in the week from the victim," said Sheriff Richard Roundtree.
He says that appears to be the only connection between Cooper and Baker, but that the two had bad blood between them.
While Baker continues to recover in the hospital, Roundtree said he did not believe there were any active threats to anyone on the Paine College campus.
However school officials admitted that several students were sent home. "In order to maintain a safe environment, students that we felt needed to go home for the need of them being safe, we did help them with transitioning out of Augusta," said Brown.
Brown would not confirm whether it was to keep current students safe or keep those students sent home, safe. The college also confirmed there were other people on campus who "had no business there" and were ordered to leave and they could face charges if the return.
