Local Update - November 2, 2007

No Soap at School

It might be a good idea to send some hand sanitizer with your kids to class. News 12 has learned there are complaints of no soap in the bathrooms at Hephzibah Middle School. One mom says she's been sending soap to school with her 7th grade daughter since the first week. She's especially worried now that M.R.S.A is popping up in the district. News 12 talked to the principal, who admitted that the school sometimes runs out of soap. She says they refilled all of the soap dispensers on Tuesday.

New M.R.S.A. Case In Richmond County

Another confirmed case of the dangerous M.R.S.A. infection has popped up in Richmond County schools. The new case is at Hephzibah Elementary, bringing the total to four. Superintendent Doctor Dana Bedden held a news conference Thursday, saying the district has now purchased special cleaning supplies. He says emergency supplies of hand soap are also available to all schools at the principal's request.

Blue Ribbon School

Fort Gordon's Freedom Park Elementary school has been recognized as the No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School for 2007. More than 40 percent of the disadvantaged children showed dramatic improvement. and the school performed in the top ten percent on state tests.

Drought Fight

Georgia, Florida, and Alabama could be one step closer this morning to ending the battle over water. During extreme drought, the Army Corps of engineers has decided to reduce river flow into Florida and Alabama.
Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue says he's extremely happy about that.
However, the Fish and Wildlife Service still has to approve it because of the potential impact on several protected endangered species.

First Friday

It's First Friday today in downtown Augusta. That means lots of live entertainment, good food, and great music. It starts at 5:00 tonight, and admission is free.

Fall Back

We want to remind you to set your clocks back one hour this weekend. The official end of Daylight Savings Time is November 4th. You should set your clocks back Saturday night before you go to bed.
