AUGUSTA, GA---Only on 12: An elderly man is attacked by two pit bulls belonging to another family member.
"Anybody would have told me this would have happened I would have never believed it," says 73-year-old William Dickens. He is back home after being attacked by two pit bulls early this morning. Family members are in shock.
"It's sad to see my dad laying there knowing the type of person that he is. He's so active for his age, and to be honest, physically, he's in better health than we are," says daughter Judy Malin.
Mr. Dickens still faces surgery after an attack that left him with 160 stitches in his leg and a gash in his arm the size of a baseball.
"I don't know how they're going to sew it together," he says. "I guess they know what they're going to do, but I can't see how they're going to get it together."
He was working in the yard when the dogs attacked his arms and legs. He managed to stumble into his truck, but that didn't stop the dogs. You can still see their paw prints on the door.
"I just thank God they didn't go for the neck and pull him down that way, because 73 years old with two dogs...he wouldn't have made it," said Dennis Dickens, one of five children. "Just lucky I wasn't there at the time, because I would have handled the problem then and there."
His brother is in jail, charged with cruelty to animals. It was two of his five dogs that dug out from under a fence and attacked.
"It's something that you have no control over, and God's the only one that has the answer, but he saw fit to spare my dad and I praise him for that," Judy said.
"I'm hard to get down. I been like that all my life so ain't no need to stop now," Mr. Dickens said.
