Local Update - October 30, 2007

Armed Robbery

Investigators are on the scene of an armed robbery at Pine Log Road and Whiskey Road in Aiken. Witnesses say it's a Kangaroo gas station. We have a crew heading to the scene, and we'll pass along new information as soon as we get it.

Overnight Fire

Firefighters are working on putting out hot spots after an overnight fire in Columbia County. It happened at 4524 Silver Lake Drive, which is right off Washington Road. News 12 has learned one person has been taken to the hospital, but the injuries are not serious. It's just a precautionary measure. Investigators are looking into a cause right now. We will pass along any new information as soon as we get it.

Barnwell County Fire

The fire at an apartment complex in Barnwell County is out this morning, and now investigators believe it may have been electrical.
It happened at the Litchfield Apartment Complex off Highway 64. No one was hurt.

Georgia Power Imposter

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office wants you to be on the lookout for an impostor. This weekend, a man came to the home of Clifton Weathers in Grovetown, saying he was from Georgia Power and needed to do some work. This is a scam. Deputies say the suspect wants to distract you so his partner can rob you. If a Georgia Power worker comes to your house, make sure you see his or her badge. You can also call the sheriff's office to make sure.

Bike Attack Suspect Sought

Richmond County investigators think they know who assaulted a man on his bike this weekend. They have one suspect in custody and are looking for another. Deputies are charging Charleyne Wright with aggravated assault after investigators say she and her son beat a man and left him in critical condition. Her son, Larry Darnell Williams, is still on the loose this morning.


The adult bookstore along Gordon Highway is looking to open again, but first, XMart attorneys are planning to go after damages and attorney fees in federal court.
After that, they'll decide what to do next. Workers with the city's licensing department say they do not recommend granting the store a license. In a letter to the store's attorney, the city says XMart is too close to school bus stops and a city gateway.
