Sexual misconduct nearly a quarter of SC teacher discipline problems

October 22, 2007

Background checks, credential reviews, and interviews. They're all part of the process in hiring South Carolina teachers...but they might not be enough.

A five-year study indicates nearly a quarter of all teachers disciplined by the state for misbehavior were accused of sex-related conduct. The offenses range from looking at porn while at work to making sexually suggestive comments to teens to molesting children.

The Palmetto State has 53,000 teachers, and 99 of them were involved in some type of sexual misconduct.
