Stolen Virgin Mary reappears at school

October 10, 2007

AUGUSTA, Ga.---The statue of the Virgin Mary is back where it belongs.

The Immaculate Conception School says a student's grandmother showed them the statue Wednesday morning outside the school. The statue was wrapped in cloth and inside a grocery cart.

The grandmother says a friend saw two men pushing the statue in the cart towards the school on Tuesday night.

In an email to New 12, Assistant Principal Ed Belinski says the student and grandmother are the school's heroes of the week. They also lead Wednesday's Pledge to the Flag and morning prayers.

The white statue of the Virgin Mary had been missing since last Wednesday (October 3). The school is located at the intersection of Laney Walker and 11th Street in downtown Augusta.
