EVANS, Ga. --- If you're looking to buy some things to cut down on your energy bill, this is the weekend to do it.

If you buy anything from windows to refrigerators this week in Georgia, you will not pay state sales tax on them.

The Energy Star Sales-Tax Holiday is designed to encourage you to buy energy efficient appliances and home improvements. But the savings won't stop there; you'll also save big money on your utility bills.

It's not too often that Angela Medina gets a pleasant surprise when she's shopping for something expensive, but she did on Thursday. "I understand it’s tax free today," she said.

That means her refrigerator will cost a lot less than the sticker price. That's because this weekend, Georgia is having an Energy-Star Sales-Tax Holiday.

Meaning you won't pay state tax on many Energy-Star appliances and home improvement products. But why buy them?

"Older model refrigerators, you could squeeze and compress it. They backfill it with insulation foam now," Lowe's Manager Stan Frazier said.

That means it's using less energy to keep your food cool, which saves big bucks on your utility bill.

The other Energy Star products will save money in much the same way, by operating more efficiently.

If that's too technical, let's put it in terms everyone can understand: dollars and cents.

An Energy Star refrigerator can save you between $30 and $70 annually. Energy Star windows can save you more than $400 a year. An Energy Star clothes washer can save up to $100 every year.

It all adds up.

Sam Deck and his wife have taken energy efficiency to the next level with their Eco Design home.

From the tin roof to collect rain water, to the geo-thermal heating and cooling unit, and then the insulation that covers every nook and cranny of the home, their utility bills are a pittance compared to others. "Our average utility cost in utility bills is going to be between $75 and $100," Sam said.

You may not be able to do the same, but this weekend you can get a start on it. By spending a little bit now, you'll save a lot later.
