ATLANTA (AP) -- Staff from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission say
there are no major environmental problems that would prevent
building two nuclear reactors in eastern Georgia.

A draft report released Tuesday that studied the environmental
impacts of expanding Plant Vogtle says federal regulators should
allow the project to proceed. It updates an earlier study.

The Atlanta-based Southern Co. and its partners hope to become
the first to win permission to build a new nuclear plant since
1978. The reactors would be built at an existing plant near
Waynesboro.

Members of the public still have more than two months to comment
on the report, which is not final. The NRC is still weighing
whether to give the project final approval. That decision is not
expected until next year.
