AUGUSTA, Ga.--One person is dead after an officer involved shooting. It happened around 5:25pm Monday evening outside Five Guys Burgers and Fries on Washington Road.

The Richmond County coroner says 22-year-old Kevin Brayano Pao is the man who was shot and killed. Coroner Grover Tuten say Pao was pronounced dead at the scene. Pao was from Rockville, MD.

Richmond County's Sheriff Ronnie Strength says Deputy Walter Garrison responded to a call of a disturbance inside the restaurant. They say Pao was found bathing in the bathroom. Deputy Garrison escorted him out of the business and into the back seat of his patrol car. They say Pao was carrying a bag in his hand.

Sheriff Strength says as Deputy Garrison was putting Pao in the back seat of the car, Pao reached into the bag he was carrying and then there was a scuffle. They say Deputy Garrison shot Pao at least one time in the chest.

"He sat down in the backseat of the patrol car with bag in his hand and then he reached his hand into the bag,"said Sheriff Strength. "The officer tried to take the bag from him, it was a struggle, the officer fired hitting the guy in the chest."

Pao died on the scene and the GBI will determine a definitive cause of death as they investigate officer procedure.

We know his hand went into the bag,and that's why the officer tried to get the bag from him. He didn't know what was in the bag," added Strength.

Investigators say they found a weapon inside the bag after the shooting happened.

"In our inventory, there is a handgun in there," said Strength.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the shooting.

Sheriff Strength says Five Guys as well as other businesses along Washington Road have reported Pao to authorities for being a disturbance.

The Five Guys Burgers Fries along with the other nearby businesses remained open during the incident.
