ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -- Budget trouble could mean the end of free Wednesday admission to Georgia's state parks.

The perk allows visitors to skip the $5 admission fee, which costs the Department of Natural Resources about $400,000 annually.

The department has proposed ending the free admission program as lawmakers push the state park system to become more financially independent amid an ongoing budget crisis. The public has a chance to comment on the proposed change until Oct. 22.

Afterward, state officials will make a decision on whether to start charging park users on Wednesdays.
