AUGUSTA, Ga.---A worker at the Augusta-Richmond County Solid Waste Department has been arrested and charged with stealing money.
Katrina Jones, accountant for the solid waste department, was taken to the Richmond County Jail and charged with felony theft by taking of government funds. Investigators say she stole approximately $71,000 from people dropping off trash at the landfill.
"It was her job to basically deliver that to the bank, so we handed it to her, told her to take it to the bank, and that wasn't being done," said city administrator Fred Russell.
The city discovered the discrepancy during the preliminary stages of an internal audit and questioned Jones. She was then arrested.
Russell tells News 12 they believe this has been happening over the last 35 to 40 days.
The internal audit has not yet been completed, so the exact amount stolen is not yet known. It's estimated that around $50,000 in checks has been recovered and around $12,000 in cash is still unaccounted for.
