AUGUSTA, Ga. --- Gloria Hampton is recovering in the hospital after being shot in the head early this morning, and her suspected shooter, 63-year-old Carrie Turner, is in the Richmond County Jail.
Some in this part of town say gunfire
"He said will you call 911? I said what for? He said this lady down here, she's gonna die if you don't call 911," Elmore Sanders said.
A woman had been shot in the head right down the street. Sanders made the call.
"I just do the best I can to try and help out," he said.
Investigators said the victim, Gloria Hampton, was visiting with friends while sitting on the front steps at 1636 Ramsey Street when she was shot in the head by Carrie Turner.
"I walked down there with him and she was sitting on the ground and she was bleeding, blood was just coming out," Sanders said.
Deputies said Turner was upset because there were several people hanging out on her porch. They said she told them to leave her porch and became angry enough to start shooting. That shot grazed the top of Hampton's head.
"She's sitting on the front porch and all the sudden her head is stinging and she's doubled over praying and hoping it was nothing major. Whether to scare or to injure, I don't know what her purpose was," Richmond County Inv. Edwin Ackerknecht said.
"This is a regular routine thing down here. They up and down this street. They have fights and everything else. They on that crack and they drink that booze and when they get together they argue, fuss, and fight. I hear it all the time," Sanders said.
Hampton is listed in stable condition at MCG. Turner is in the Richmond County Jail facing felony charges, including aggravated assault.
