Local Update - September 28, 2007

Armed Robbery Update
We have new information this morning about an armed robbery turned into an all out car chase.
News 12 has learned Steffron Simpkins and Marcus Middleton are being held at the Richmond County Detention Center pending extradition to South Carolina.
They are charged with robbing the Advance Auto Store in North Augusta.
Simkins is also charged with failure to stop for police.

Chemical Spill
Workers at a plant in Allendale County are trying to get to the bottom of a huge chemical spill.
It happened thursday at the Grant Forests Products plant in Fairfax.
4 to 6 thousand gallons of ammonium hydroxide was spilled, forcing about a hundred employees to evacuate.
No one was hurt, and there appears to be no damage to the environment.

Bloody Band-aid in School Lunch
School leaders are trying to get to the bottom of why a student found a bloody band-aid in her lunch.
It happened at Butler High School.
A student was eating the fruit cup she ordered from the cafeteria when she found the used band-aid in it.

Road Detours
There are some road closures we want to remind you about.
Evans to Locks Road at Washington Road will remain closed until October 16th.
There will also be a temporary lane closing on Washington Road today from 9 am to 4 pm.
Westbound traffic near Flowing Wells Road will be reduced to one lane.

Aiken Road Expansion
This morning, the talk of expanding a major road in Aiken is causing some fireworks.
More than 350 people came to the meeting Thursday to speak out about new plans for roadwork.
They're talking about expanding Silver Bluff Road Between Richardson Lake Road and Indian Creek Trail.
Right now there are only two lanes, but planners want to widen it to four lanes.
If you missed the meeting last night, the SCDOT will take public comments until October 27th.

Deputy in Accident
Thursday's wet roads may have caused a richmond county deputy to hit a utility pole.
He was driving north on Twigg Street near the intersection of 9th Street when he hydroplaned, causing him to slide into a telephone poll.
The deputy was taken to MCG with minor injuries.

Missing Woman
Richmond and Burke county deputies need your help this morning finding a missing 32 year old woman.
They say Melinda Denise Taylor may have been kidnapped.
