AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Augusta city leaders say the Laney Walker area has been changing for the better.

They broke ground on the Twiggs Circle Project on Wednesday. Private developers plan to build more than a 150 new homes.

"They knocked some down right here," said Laney Walker resident Michael Scott.

Scott has lived in Laney Walker for about 15 years. He's glad to see change.

"It's a good idea to build some new houses and change the neighborhood. They need to build some good homes and so good people could live in them," Scott said.

"Everything that you have built has been sold or has a contract," said HCD Director Chester Wheeler.

Housing and Community Development Director Chester Wheeler says about a dozen homes on Pine Street are sold except for two. On 11th Street officials said about nine new houses are up for sale. Between two private developers 100's of homes are being built on Wrightsboro and Twiggs Circle.

"This is just the start," said Commissioner Corey Johnson.

Private developers Builders Of Hope announced plans to build three homes now with more than 70 more to follow. In the same area, the Housing Authority plans to build more than 120 single family homes.

After a $2.5 million loan, city leaders are hoping the project can be self-sustaining.

"Not yet. It's one of the things Builders of Hope has done by bringing in financing. Talks have begun on how do we develop a model," Wheeler said.

Construction on the latest projects could start before the end of the year according to officials.
