AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW)---- "An innocent child? Who does that? Who does that? And what was my baby thinking...Both of my babies...What were they thinking," asked Katherine Haney.
With tears in her eyes this mother tells the story of how her daughter's boyfriend confessed to killing Ashley Kaney and the 8-year-old grandchild she called Riley Roo.
"It was the Friday before he killed her actually," Kaney told News12.
She says that last conversation with her daughter is when she finally realized something wasn't right. She says Ashley would always make time to talk to her momma.
"She said mommy I'm sorry I'm on date night and I'm not allowed to talk on the phone and she hung up. I mean I literally cried when I hung up the phone," she said.
Being cut off from family and friends, controlling finances, and even verbal abuse are some signs Sarah Tuccitto, with the Cumbee Center in Aiken says are red flags.
"South Carolina stands out compared to every other state in the nation because it ranks number one for men killing women which is astounding," she said.
And if you think that stat is just a one time thing--listen up.
"South Carolina is also ranked in the top 10 for the last 15 years, claiming the number one spot three times," said Tuccitto.
Katherine hopes no one else suffers like she did, but if they do she says people do care and you will not be alone.
"I have been blown away and overwhelmed by the love and support that has been given to me by people I don't even know--I've never seen," she said.
Oct. 20 is your chance to make your meal mean more than just a filling of the stomach.
You can come to the Red Pepper in Aiken from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. where all proceeds will to go help families like Ashley's and the Cumbee Center.
Prices for couples at the Red Pepper are 50 dollars-- that will include food, drinks, and live entertainment. If you're single, don't let that stop you-- 30 bucks is what they are asking.
